This week, Pub-Ouest’s local correspondent R\u00e9gis Braltar takes a look at Eric Eric, a figure on the Capbreton scene, who was rudely plucked from his quiet anonymity by a publicity campaign.<\/p>\n

\n

But who, in real life, has the same first name as their surname?
Well, that’s the case for Eric, a Landais whose family name is lost in the mists of time, that of the Vikings. In fact, the tradition of LaTorelle is a survival of that era: on Christmas Eve, the entire village of Capbreton still holds a bonfire. It is said that, in the past, this spectacular blaze was intended to cast the villagers’ multiplying shadows to discourage the approaching Vikings, engaged on the River Adour, which then flowed into Capbreton.
Family tales tell of an illustrious ancestor named Eric Le Grand, who came from Scandinavia as a warlord, kidnapped a beautiful Landaise woman and settled not far from the mouth of the Adour at La Pointe, where he began organic market gardening and dune viticulture, inventing the famous Vin des Sables.
Next, Eric Le Grand introduced the Capbreton fishermen to a number of improvements in the design of their frail boats, now known as pinasses. This enabled them to venture further out into the vast oceans, and to go whale-fishing as far as the shores of the New World. <\/p>\n

Then, the Eric clan took part in the great adventures of Landes history: silviculture, the great sharecroppers’ revolt of 1920, the beginnings of the industrial era with the Forges de l’Adour, which closed in the 60s, then, curiously, the black gold rush to Parentis-en-Born, where oil is still extracted, followed by a long period of contemplation of the seaside tourism boom, which began in the 30s and reached its apogee in the 70s and 80s. In short, with the advent of capitalism and the supposed end of history, the Eric family withdrew, making only discreet appearances in the town. <\/p>\n

Then, in the 1990s, the entire Eric clan fell into a gambling addiction and squandered the entire family fortune on the Capbreton casino, which allowed the casino to be renovated and rebuilt identically, but with little pieces of mosaic inlaid on top (a nod to the Le Cathare emirs who were pictured parked across the harbor in monstrous yachts. We know they didn’t answer the call).<\/p>\n

It was then up to the youngest son, named Eric, to restore the family’s reputation by taking part in French surfing history, winning the 2014 foam board championship on Capbreton’s central beach. In the process, he saved the crew of a pleasure boat from drowning when it overturned with its crew at the entrance to the harbor. On board the boat was a personality who had forever changed the image of the Landes people, F\u00e9licien, by being one of the first participants in the emerging reality TV show, Le Loft, in 2002.
Building on the name he had made in the surfing world, Eric Eric opened his own surf school, Ki Surf School<\/a>, which combines surfing, tai chi chuan and herbal medicine<\/a>. A small, intimate school, designed to cater for small numbers of people on the best beaches in Capbreton, Hossegor and Seignosse. <\/p>\n

The 2020 campaign around his name was once again a source of embarrassment.<\/p>\n

Let’s recall the title: “Eric bought his fish after pedaling for 6 minutes, thank you Eric”.<\/p>\n

First of all, he lives 3 minutes’ walk from the port, so he’d have to make a considerable detour to get to his fish in 6 minutes by bike. Secondly, this sudden notoriety, a tribute to his illustrious genealogy rather than to his own merits, has led to an avalanche of calls for surfing lessons or to make anti-covid potions from fennel and chamomile. <\/p>\n

The eminence grise behind the campaign, a shadowy figure in the Capbreton tourist office, declined to comment on the somewhat abusive use she had made of the image of an honest Capbreton citizen. It would have been a good idea to ask for his agreement, even if this free publicity enabled him to promote his surf school among the multitude of others in the south of the Landes region. <\/p>\n

Here, in a few words, is the person behind the name of this advertising campaign (which we’re not sure is aimed at cycling, buying fish, or christening his child conceived during a stay in Capbreton with the first name Eric).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
