Now that the use of foam boards is becoming more widespread, and the number of foam board suppliers has multiplied, the quality of these educational boards has greatly improved. To the delight of surf coaches and their students. Nevertheless, there are still a few aberrations on the market in terms of glide optimization and maneuverability.

 The perfect Foam Board

There’s no doubt about it: for beginners, a foam board offers many advantages. The first, of course, is safety: with a foam board and soft fins, the risk of accidents is virtually nil. As a result, beginners can ride without the constant fear of injuring themselves or another surfer.

And while a foam board can’t match the performance of a high-end resin board, foam boards are now available in very high quality. And the technical disparities between soft and hard boards are tending to disappear.

Like a hard resin board, a high-performance foam board combines lightness and rigidity. You’ll need to find the right compromise here, because feather-light boards are often fragile, like the boards used by pro surfers for ephemeral use during a few competitions.

The strongest foam boards on the market generally have two wooden slats to consolidate the foam core. They are also covered with resin-impregnated fiberglass, just like any other surfboard. The foam covers the whole to provide the safety element. If the foam is the right shape, you’ve got the ideal board for progress. What’s more, some boards are reinforced with denser foam at the ends and sides of the board, where it is most likely to be damaged. 7’oceans boards are thus designed to offer optimum glide and safety, but almost all suppliers now offer a range combining resin and foam coating.

Other brands of foam boards also offer the advantage of being able to equip the board, thanks to the FCS system, with higher-performance daggerboards than those usually offered by foam board designers: Catchsurf, which to promote itself features professional surfers executing radical tricks with foam boards equipped with rigid daggerboards. It’s true that an excellent surfer would be able to ride any board, so try it out for yourself.

At Ki Surf School, we’re constantly on the lookout for the best foam boards on the market, as well as the latest technology, because we believe that beginners also deserve high-performance equipment.

Differentiating between a good board and a bad one

The babouch board

This board has been designed to avoid nose-diving on take-off in a hollow wave. If you’re a beginner paddling an unbroken wave and you don’t get up fast enough, the nose of your board will nose dive at the bottom of the wave. This is part of the learning process: to succeed in straightening up without nose-diving, you need to be able to paddle efficiently, read the waves to get to the right place at the right time, and then stand up dynamically at the top of the wave.

A “babouch board” has the nose of the board so raised that it is certainly more difficult to get into the bore than with a board of more moderate curvature, but the board then becomes a veritable calf of the sea: the beginner struggles to pick up speed as the board pushes water out of the way, wasting energy only to succeed in getting into the wave late when it has become too hollow. He also ends up burying the nose of the board.

A good board, fast and easy to paddle, is relatively flat. A board with too much rocker is like a ball and chain attached to a beginner’s leg.

A board that’s too flat

Sometimes, in the Chinese factory where the board is manufactured, a small mistake is made: the foam blocks preformed with a lengthwise curvature (rocker) are fed into the pressing machine upside down, and come out with a very contrarian, almost inverted curvature. This supplier will sell these boards as if nothing had happened, and you’ll be the one paying for the mistake made upstream. For the sake of brevity, we won’t mention any names.

However, a board that lacks lift at the front (the nose of the board rises slightly) is not forgiving of mistakes and runs the risk of crashing at the bottom of the wave. In foam, it’s okay, in waves, it’s trickier.

Also, if you’re buying a used board: if it’s been stored flat over time, simply because of gravity, it may have become as flat as a pancake, in which case it will be unsurfaceable.

The folded used board

A folded board, whether foam or resin-covered, is a board on borrowed time. It won’t be long before it breaks in two. If it’s given to you or rented out, accompany it in its last moments by offering it the ultimate glide.
If you do rent it out, however, indicate on the rental contract that it’s already folded. We’ve known dishonest rental companies (fortunately, there aren’t many of them) who have demanded that customers refund a board that was already on the verge of breaking.

Too light to be honest

A lightweight board is easier to handle and therefore performs better. However, if the board is excessively light, it would be wise to check its composition: if it is not canvas-covered, if the foam is held in place by a single wooden batten, and if only the foam coating is used as a glaze, it will not stand up well to intensive use and may bend in strong waves.

It’s the same with the boards used by pro surfers: they’re “disposable” boards, designed for ephemeral use because lightness was favored over solidity.

The board that drank water

Some foam boards take on water in the daggerboard inserts, which are not waterproof. As a result, after a few sessions, the new board weighs as if it had been in the Viet Nam war. But a heavy board has more inertia, turns less easily and feels less pleasant when it lands on your head.

What’s more, the water-soaked lath weakens the foam bar, which will eventually break in two with use.

The axed board

In reality, a good foam board has the same properties as a good resin board. Some shapes work, others don’t. Furthermore, the board must be adapted to the surfer’s size and level, as well as to the wave qualities he or she intends to surf.

Hybrid boards try to reconcile the properties of the mini-malibu with the appearance of the shortboard to generally catastrophic effect in terms of glide (speed and maneuverability). Easy-to-surf boards are relatively flat, rounded and non-tapered, with rails that are smooth enough to make it easy to switch from one rail to another.

Many foam boards also have a thick tail with no trailing edge, and skid at the bottom turn when a more experienced surfer pushes at the bottom of the wave.

Other boards, on the other hand, have the rail so pinched that it tends to stick in the water when the wave is soft, causing loss of speed and falls.

The spaghetti board

For safety reasons, the daggerboards on foam boards are made of soft plastic with rounded edges, and are perfect for use by surfers in their first years of learning.

Advanced surfers, on the other hand, put a lot of pressure on their supports and surf bigger, more vertical waves, so it’s a good idea to use stiffer daggerboards.

Most foam boards are equipped with screw-fastening daggerboards. Some foam boards, however, are equipped with an FCS system to accommodate all types of daggerboards, soft as well as hard.

And while a daggerboard shouldn’t deform too much, it doesn’t have to have sharp edges to perform well. The FYN daggerboard is a hard daggerboard with soft edges, combining the advantages of high performance daggerboards and soft daggerboards, while eliminating the risk of cutting.

One brand whose name I won’t mention produces soft daggerboards with very tapered edges, which in my opinion is an aberration in terms of both performance and safety.

The dwarf daggerboard

A few years ago, dwarf daggerboards were introduced in response to demand from a number of large surf schools wishing to store as many boards as possible in a given space: indeed, a board equipped with mini-daggerboards takes up less space.
However, after the very first learning phase, a daggerboard that is too small leads to a lack of stability and board handling, which is an aberration in terms of performance. Beginners have every right to expect their boards to be equipped with standard-sized daggerboards to facilitate the learning process.

Hard board and foam board: the same battle

Just because a board has a rigid coating of polyester resin, epoxy or hard plastic doesn’t mean it’s fantastic. In fact, prices and qualities vary widely, in the quality of materials and design, in the diversity of shapes (the shaper sculpts the board).

The shape of the board combines various parameters: length, width and thickness of the board, distribution of volumes from the back to the front of the board. Rocker (lengthwise curvature) and concave/convex (widthwise curvature). Pinching or rounding of rails (board edges). Tail shape.

Even if the foam blocks are now cut by machines, it was originally genuine human beings who made the models whose ribs are now entered into the mechanical shaper’s computer. The quality of the glazing (covering the board to make it watertight and resistant), still carried out by a shaper, will determine the board’s weight and solidity.

What surfers need is not so much a nice board, but one that works well and is adapted to their level, size and physical condition!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

[227,193

post-6430","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-all","category-surf-coaching
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
