SURF AND TAICHI

THE SCHOOL : SURF AND TAICHI

FIRST OF ALL, WHY KI ?
This word, which comes to us from Asia, is synonymous with energy :

The energy which is present in martial arts and disciplines connected with energetic well-being but also the energy that’s contained in a wave as with that which animates the surfer confronted with the power of the ocean, simple energy that helps us to get up in the morning and gets us moving.

The Polynesian people call this energy the « MANA » ; it is present in nature and transmits its power to men who respect it. Before, in the Hawaiian lineage, people passed on objects full of mana from generation to generation – , it could have been an arrow, ritual of a tribal priest or a surfboard of an ancestor.

Coherent with his practice of teaching surf and tai chi chuan, Eric offers a host of sporting activities, for individuals or groups (companies, school children, summer camps (for children) :

Surfing courses
Taichi courses
Combination of surfing and taichi courses.

Surf and tai chi chuan are complementary disciplines : working on balance, coordination, release and letting go, posture and suppleness, instant reactivity, stress management transformed into positive energy.

SMALL DEFINITIONS
TAICHI is a form of kung-fu whose movements, performed more often than not slowly, aim at the harmony of the body and mind using a martial art and a health approach.
SURFING is more of an art than a sport as it combines an almost aesthetic research, a symbiose with the waves – a body dance with the ocean !
These definitions speak for themselves, so just come along and try it !!

KI SURF : OPTIMISATION OF SURFING PERFORMANCE

Ki Surf School moreover affirms that there is a narrow relation between surfing and taichi (searching for balance, harmony in space, well-being by practising sport) and offers everybody, irrespective of their age, the discovery of these two complementary disciplines.

KI SURF : TRAINING BY TAICHI

The difficulty with surfing is that the action takes place instantly, in an intuitive way, the wave doesn’t allow the surfer to repeat the same movement to master the technique quickly.
This is where tai chi chuan intervenes : Ki Surf is supported by the sequences and movements coming from taichi. To master the body in space and to have an adapted response to the moment, Ki Surf School has implemented a training programme specific to surfing :

Balancing postures.
Movements activated by the hips
Fluidity in the sequence of movements.
Searching of explosive calmly and with flexibility.
Important work on various supports.
Attention-concentration-observation.

TAICHI ORIGINES, CHEN STYLE

There are different tai chi chuan families et Eric teaches here the Chen style, which is also the oldest. This martial art exist at least since 400 years, in a central village named Chenjiagou, where it is transmitted from generation to generation until today. Taichi belong to the family of Chinese internal martial arts.
Members of this family have perpetuated the Chen style, among them the Grand Master Chen Quanzhong. In the 1940s, his family left Chenjiagou to settle in Xi’an, historic city that was the capital of the first imperial dynasties. Born in 1925, Chen Quanzhong is the oldest grand master of taichi today. He forged his art from masters of the 16th, 17th and 18th generation.
His son and granddaughter, Chen Xi Peng and Chen Xuejiao, are the great masters from whom I have the chance to train me in this ancient martial art that is the boxing of the Chen family.

THE PRACTICE OF TAICHI, CHEN STYLE

Tai chi chuan is a form of kung fu, the movements executed most often slow, aim at the harmony of body and mind in a martial but also health approach.
Taichi is for everyone, not just surfers, since this is a martial art together with a convenient to live well and feel good.
Of course, like other sports, there are different levels of physical engagement : Taichi is practiced into old age, by soft movements which respect the physical integrity. Rather than force, it is best to work on muscle relaxation.
Practiced intensively, the taichi is also tiring than any other sport. Some prefer to work more flexibly but ultimately, the training depends on the physical condition, commitment and expectations of each practitioner. The master fits.
It is far from the image of a maintenance gymnastics for seniors. Learning the taichi, long and subtle, makes you feel good in body and spirit, help you to keep calm without let it go. As the picture of a boxing hiding a fist in a velvet glove !
Then come discover a taichi training of the Chen style!

SURF, TAICHI & COMPANIE

SURF, TAICHI & COMPANIE : HOMOLABORIUS VS OCEAN
For convivial and enjoyable practice : making progress together taking into account the profile and capacities of each individual (different type of learning methods).

STRESS MANAGEMENT
Incessant changes in the ocean make surfing a discipline which teaches how to adapt to the present moment (the surfer turns himself around the waves, he doesn’t attack them head-on). The adrenalin and euphoria of sliding, as action motors, changes urgent situations into postive stress management.
At the same time, tai chi chuan allows a state of calmness to exist to make an appropriate reply to external agressions (when tense, the body and spirit become inoperational).
Taichi is part of kung-fu whose movements, carried out slowly and precisely, aims at martial efficiency as well as health of body and mind.

LEARNING ABOUT FREEDOM, WITHIN THE RESTRICTIONS OF ONE’S ENVIRONMENT
As in every company, freedom takes place within limits of security and knowledge of the environment.
Every learning experience, and even more so in martial arts, is based on the idea of discipline, not that of restriction but positive discipline which enables the instructor a little space.

THE BALANCE
Balancing on a surfboard, as well as the balance demanded by the postures and Taichi movements impose also on the body a postural rigour which contributes to body balance for better health (back problems, bad respiration psychosomatic illnesses …)

DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHILD AND YOUNG ADULT : SURF AND TAICHI

Tai chi chuan is not a keep-fit form of gymnastics for older people. Neither is it an esotheric discipline, nor a type of yoga or meditation.
Taichi is definitely part of Chinese energetic arts and constitutes, by this title, a health discipline. But is also is part of the kungfu family. More precisely, internal kungfu which calls for avoidance techniques rather than brute force.
For this reason, taichi is practised in China from a very young age and Ki Surf School wishes to promote these virtues of taichi in the psychomotor development of the child and young adult.

BODY DEVELOPMENT

Development of coordination, mastering one’s body in space.
Work on balance and posture.
Improvement of breathing capacity and suppleness.
Connecting movements with their martial application with enjoyable practice.

PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Learning to channel and manage energy.
Working on concentration and the strengthening of observational capacities.
Respect for appropriate discipline in respect of martial arts.
Respect for others by defensive and martial art games, control of excitability and agression.
Managing timidity by interaction with other children : movements carried out all together or in pairs.
Sensorial stimulation by rooting oneself and learning of complex movements.
